Anaheim Reserve Officer Killed Serving in Iraq

Anaheim Reserve Officer Edward Smith lost his life in battle in Iraq while serving with the United States Marines.

On April 5, while leading a company of 200 Marines into Baghdad, Gunny was killed in action. He was serving as the 1st Sergeant in the 2nd Tank Battalion, Fox Company, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.

Gunny is survived by his wife and three children. A memorial fund has been established by his fellow officers at Anaheim PD for his family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the "Sergeant Edward Smith Memorial Fund," c/o Harbor National Bank, 101 East Lincoln Avenue, #125, Anaheim, California 92805.

For those of you who did not know Gunny personally, he served 20 years in the Marine Corp. He was set to retire this coming August. Gunny graduated from the Palomar Police Academy (Palomar College, San Marcos) in March, 1999, where he was named "Top Cop". He was hired as a reserve officer by Anaheim PD in May, 1999, and later named 2000 Rookie of the Year by Anaheim PD, and then 2001 Orange County Reserve Officer of the Year. He was an active member of Anaheim's Special Tactics Detail/SWAT team, and was in the process of becoming a full time member. Gunny was also a member of the California Reserve Peace Officers Association and attended ARPOC conferences for the past three years.

Gunny was a man full of life, who deeply loved his family, as well as his country. Those that knew him, knew of his commitment to both his family and service to others. He made a difference, and he will be deeply missed.

Thank you, Reserve Officer Edward Smith, for all you did, and may God bless you and your family. We will miss you, Gunny.
