Accident Insurance

CRPOA suggests that you fully understand what coverage your agency provides you and under what conditions. Does the coverage apply when you serve as a volunteer, or only when your agency has a "callout" for your services? If you have a full-time occupation in addition to your volunteer position, you should also determine what benefits you may have from your full-time employer while you are volunteering. If you have other Accident Insurance polices, be sure to discuss with your Insurance Agent if coverage applies when you are serving as a volunteer. While CRPOA hopes that you will never have the need for Accident Insurance we are ready to assist all Reserve Peace Officers, Volunteers in Law Enforcement and Search and Rescue members.

The coverage period and reporting requirements are the same as defined in the Covered Accidents, Coverage Period and Reporting Requirements under the heading of Disability Coverage. This policy provides the following benefits for the accidental loss of:

Loss Benefit
Life (Must occur within 180 days of the accident) $30,000
Hand or foot $15,000
Both hands or both feet $30,000
Sight of one eye $15,000
Sight of both eyes $30,000
Speech and hearing $30,000
Speech or hearing $15,000
Thumb and index finger of same hand $7,500

Under the loss of extremity, this coverage includes the loss of use, such as paralysis as well. If loss of life occurs and the use of a seat belt was available for use at the time of the accident, and the seat belt was in use, then a 10% increase in the death benefit will be paid. In all injuries, the aggregate is $150,000. The Insurance Agency may request, at their expense, as often as reasonably necessary during the investigation of a claim and to make an autopsy in the case of death unless prohibited by law.

In-hospital Benefit

In the event your accident requires an in-hospital stay, you will receive $100 per day, following a 2-day waiting period, for a maximum of 14 days.

Rehabilitation/Retraining

In the event your accident results in your not being able to carry on your gainful employment, you are eligible to receive a Rehabilitation/Retraining benefit in the amount of 10 percent of the loss benefit to a maximum of $10,000.

Psychological Therapy

In the event your accident results in the need for psychological therapy, you are eligible to receive psychological therapy benefit in the amount of 10 percent of the loss benefit to a maximum of $10,000.

Payment of Proceeds and Beneficiary

The insurance carrier will pay the proceeds to the beneficiary the CRPOA Member designates in writing to the CRPOA Insurance Office. If there has been no such designation, then payment will be made to Insured's first surviving beneficiary as follow: a) spouse; or b) children, in equal shares; or c) parents, in equal shares; or brothers and sisters, in equal shares; or e) executor or administrator. You can file a written request with the CRPOA Insurance Office to change the beneficiary. The change will become effective as soon as it is recorded in our office. Accidental dismemberment or disability losses under this policy will be paid directly to the injured CRPOA member.

Termination of Coverage

As long as you remain a CRPOA member in good standing, the Accidental Disability Benefit and Accidental Death and Dismemberment Benefit will remain in effect. Premiums are paid as part of your membership dues with CRPOA. They are due in advance of the last day of your membership coverage. There is a 31-day grace period following the due date. The insurance will terminate on the earliest of:

  • the date you or your agency terminates your membership with CRPOA;
  • the last day on which premium contributions have been paid following notice of termination of the group policy;
  • 31 days after the due date of any premium contribution which is not paid.
Insurance terminated for nonpayment of premium contributions may be reinstated, during your lifetime, and within 31 days following the termination. No evidence of insurability will be required during this 31-day period.
